The Abbotsford Film Society hosts an Oscars Watch Party on March 2.

The Abbotsford Film Society (AFS), together with Cafe Amarti, hosts an Oscar Watch Party on Sunday, March 2 at the cafe (3033 Immel St.).

President Aaron Dawson said this is something he has wanted to do since the AFS started three years ago.

“The society is all about celebrating the art of filmmaking, so celebrating the Oscars together with people who love movies will make this a really fun event," he said.

Kelly Kang, owner of Cafe Amarti, is planning a special charcuterie selection paired with wine, which will be included in the $20 ticket price. A snacking menu and other drinks will also be available throughout the event.

Guests will get to experience a red carpet and be their own paparazzi at the Oscars Selfie Station. There will also be a 50/50 draw and movie trivia challenges, and guests will have a chance to fill out Oscar ballots, trying to guess all the winners.

“The person who guesses most accurately will win an amazing prize package,” Dawson said. “We’re so grateful to the businesses in the Clayburn Mall who contributed to create a package worth more than $400.”

The prize includes gift cards, coffee mugs, coffee and a Canucks jersey.

AFS’s mandate is to increase awareness and access to independent, art-house, Canadian, foreign and classic films.

The Oscar Watch Party will help AFS cover annual expenses such as licences, venue rentals, and insurance, while helping the society to keep ticket prices low to make their movie screenings accessible.

Doors for the event open at 3:30 p.m. for the broadcast beginning at 4 p.m. Tickets are available on eventbrite.ca (search "AFS Oscar Watch Party").
