Abbotsford Arts council announces Arty Awards nominees

The Abbotsford Arts Council has announced the nominees for the Arty Awards being presented next week.

The awards recognize and showcase local artistic excellence in individuals of all ages across multiple genres. They are presented April 9 at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, starting at 6:30 p.m.

This year, the Arty Awards theme will be a tribute to the 1980s. Attendees are  encouraged to dress for the occasion with their best '80s-inspired looks.

Tickets are available online at artyawards2016.eventbrite.ca. All ticket sales go to supporting the annual event.

This year’s nominees are:

* Christine Caldwell Arts Advocate: Alisha Deddens, Asger Hansen, Kim Janzen and Aymee Leake;

* Outstanding Artist in the Visual Arts (Traditional Media): Kathleen Fowlstone, Cynthia Frenette, Jeffrey Rasmussen, Jeff Stackhouse, Shannon Thiesen andCarmen West;

* Outstanding Artist in the Visual Arts (Digital Media and Photography): Brittany Cardinal, Sharaless Prang and Andrew Simpson;

* Outstanding Post-Secondary Student Artist: Valerie Franklin, Candice Okada,Kendra Schellenberg, and Julie Loland;

* Outstanding Student Artist: Allistair Bevan, Manvir Gill and Ella McCallum;

* Outstanding Artist in the Literary Arts: Kristin Van Vloten and Carrie Wachsmann;

* Kelly Meade Outstanding Artist in Performing Arts (Dance): Lineke Van Kleek and Jennifer Wilford;

* Outstanding Artist in Performing Arts (Music): Simon Bridgefoot, Her Brothers,Joel Noftle and Sylvia Platters;

* Outstanding Artist in Performing Arts (Theatre): Jay Danzigar, Dani Dejong,Andrew Gillott, Mark Kroeker and Kelly Shackleford;

* Outstanding Arts Organization: Business in Black, Devon Clifford Music Foundation and Louden Singletree Literary Magazine;

* Brodeur’s Bistro Outstanding Artist in the Culinary Arts: Cassie Crocco, Jason Dyckstra, Tim Garofano, Jeff Massey, Crystal Reddy and Kristina and Johannes Van Vloten; and

* Honourable Mentions: Rod Barker, Janelle Fitz, Cat Janzen, Lianne Mitchell and Aaron Young.
