Walking Forward event in Abbotsford honours residential school survivors

An event takes place Sept. 29 at Sumas First Nation in Abbotsford in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

An event takes place in Abbotsford on Sunday, Sept. 29 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation the following day.

The event, titled Walking Forward, runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Sema:th First Nation at 2788 Sumas Mtn. Rd.

Walking Forward is hosted by Sto:lo Nation, Sumas First Nation and Sts'elemeqw Residential School Thrivers Society to honour residential school survivors, as well as 1960s scoop and day scoop survivors.

"We want to come together to listen to stories, share our culture and find positive ways forward," they say.

The opening ceremony is at 9 a.m. Activities throughout the day include a survivors panel, a Squidilitch ceremony, lunch, and panels focused on Taking Care of Our Children, wellness and thrivers.

Breakout tents include raffles, salmon preparation videos, gifts, a sharing tent and a wellness tent.

Festivities at the end of the day include a salmon barbecue dinner, entertainment and a Slahal tournament.
