The once-a-year event still runs Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.

The Abbotsford centre, which cares for hundreds of sick, injured and orphaned wild birds and small animals each year opens its doors only once a year for visitors to see some of the recovering patients and tour the facilities.

Founder Elizabeth Melnick says the animals need to stay away from human presence if they are to be released back into the wild.

She started the operation in her home almost 32 years ago and then moved to the current 1.1 acre property in 2002.

Melnick doesn’t discriminate against any species (though the facility won’t take birds of prey) accepting animals from Hope and west.

The numbers of displaced animals in need of help are increasing according to Melnick but she says, “we’re never to full to take an animal.”
