VIDEO: Abbotsford music students jazz things up at board meeting before Christmas

Christmas spirit always runs especially high in schools in December, but this week, students took their merry-making to the board office.

The Abby Flats, a vocal jazz ensemble from the Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts Sumas Mountain, presented a collection of Christmas songs to the school board on Tuesday night, during the regular board meeting.

The group consisted of eight Grade 11 and 12 students, one graduate and their teacher and musical director, Paul Luongo. They were introduced by the school’s principal, Karen Bennett.

For about 20 minutes, they sang jazzy renditions of many popular holidays songs, including Silver Bells, Jingle Bell Rock and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.

The group also was featured during the meeting’s singing of O’Canada. While the board sings the national anthem at each meeting, this one included a pre-recorded version of the song from the Abby Flats, along with an accompanying video of aerial shots over some of the country’s most famous locales.
