United Way hosts 2016 Spirit Awards

The fundraising total for the United Way's most recent campaign was revealed Thursday night during the annual Spirit Awards at The Rancho in Abbotsford.

The United Way of the Fraser Valley (UWFV) held its annual Spirit Awards tonight (Thursday) at The Rancho, where recipients were honoured in 11 categories.

The awards recognize individuals and businesses that support the work of the UWFV.

It was also announced that the annual fundraising campaign collected almost $893,000, surpassing the goal of $875,000.

The UWFV campaign runs annually from September to December, and 79 per cent of the funds come from employee payroll deductions. The rest comes from corporate donations, and a small percentage is from individuals contributing outside of a workplace program.

This year's Spirit Awards dinner featured a Superhero theme.

The award recipients were:

• Campaign of the Year (more than 100 employees) – Costco Wholesale Abbotsford;

• Campaign of the Year (fewer than 100 employees) – BCAA;

• Branch of the Year – RBC Dominion Securities;

• Leadership Campaign (more than 100 employees) – RBC Financial Group;

• Leadership Campaign (fewer than 100 employees) – MNP LLP Abbotsford;

* Quantum Leap Spirit Award (more than 100) – London Drugs;

• Quantum Leap Spirit Award (fewer than 100) – Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)

• Community Partner Campaign of the Year – Abbotsford Peer Support for Seniors;

• Employee Campaign Champion of the Year – Mona Wood of Costco and Angie Esau and Harneet Grewal of CBSA:

• Regional Coordinator of the Year – Kuljeet Bains of CBSA; and

• Labour Participation Spirit Award – Fraser Valley Labour Council.
