A walkout in support of Afghan women takes place Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Abbotsford campus of University of the Fraser Valley.

The event, organized by the Community Health and Social Innovation Hub, runs from noon to 1 p.m. and is being held to demonstrate UFV's support for women in Afghanistan.

They have been banned from attending university since December 2022 and high school since September 2021, following the Taliban's takeover.

Now, girls older than Grade 3 are banned from attending school.

UFV student Sahar Maqsoodi will speak at the event. She is an Afghan women's rights activist, writer, and senior student of political science and governance.

She is the communications manager and NexusTalk host for HerStory Afghanistan and a youth leader and board member for Pathways to Leadership with the Racialized, Immigrant, and Refugee Women's Society.

Those participating in the walkout are asked to meet in the walkway between the Student Union Building (building S) and the gym (building E) at noon.
