The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will receive $75,000 in provincial funding to help students with disabilities who face barriers to education and training.

The Student Transitions Program (STP) provides accessible training and resources to help them gain skills and education for in-demand jobs.

The STP is designed to support students with disabilities in their transition from high school into the Trades and Technology faculty at UFV.

The program will start this summer and run for approximately 10 months.

Dr. Mark Evered, University of the Fraser Valley president and vice-chancellor, said the funding will support “innovative and vital experiential training in trades and technical programs” for people with disabilities.

“This support helps UFV provide students with the skills and knowledge essential for success in the Fraser Valley and beyond,” Evered said.

“Access to in-demand jobs should be available to everyone in our community,” said Abbotsford-South MLA Darryl Plecas in a news release. “Through the Student Transitions Program students with disabilities will get the training they need in less than a year to make sure they are ready for trades training and rewarding career.”

The UFV funding is part of $1.9 million for ongoing training and resources for students with disabilities at 20 public post-secondary institutions.

Since 2014 more than $4 million has gone to assist students with disabilities to overcome barriers to education and training.
