Local Rotary Clubs helped raise funds for the purchase and distribution of 280 wheelchairs in Guatemala.

Members of the three Rotary Clubs in Abbotsford were recently among those who delivered 280 wheelchairs to individuals and hospitals in Guatemala.

The items were purchased with the support of Inspired by Vision (Grand Prairie) and the Rotary Clubs of Abbotsford-Sumas, Abbotsford and Abbotsford-Matsqui.

A nine-member Rotary team provided on-the-ground assistance in Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala for the distribution of the wheelchairs.

Their trip included four separate distribution locations, tours of historical sites and a visit to the main Guatemala army barracks, with an honour guard waiting for their entrance.

The wheelchairs are crafted to be extra-durable and to endure the harsh terrain of rural roads.

Thanks to the Wheelchair Foundation of Canada, these special wheelchairs can be delivered anywhere in the world at a cost of $195 per chair, compared to the retail value of $600.
