The Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) has announced that the 2019 Student Awards program allocated 330 scholarship and bursary awards – totalling over $311,000 – to graduating students for their post-secondary education goals.
“Thanks to the generosity of local community groups, companies and individuals, we have been able to financially assist 330 students planning to attend university, college, or training institutions this coming fall,” said Lorna Hart, board chair of the ACF.
Since this program started in 1995, the ACF has provided over $5 million in scholarships and bursaries to Abbotsford high school graduates.
“ACF is proud to partner with the Abbotsford School District to facilitate this program,” said ACF Executive Director Wendy Neufeld. “Our impact on these students’ learning is a lasting legacy for the community. We are pleased to invest in the future of our local young people. This program is inspiring in so many ways.”
Student awards are funded by income from endowments and from annual donations. This year there were several new student awards including the: Emily Haw Memorial, David Shore Memorial, Cody Halfpenny Memorial, Tena Venema Memorial, Ritchie-Smith Feeds, KJ Longiye, Abby Grad 1968 and the Run for Water Global Development scholarships.
The following high schools are part of ACF’s Student Awards Program: Abbotsford Senior Secondary, Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (ASIA), Abbotsford Traditional Secondary, Bakerview Centre for Learning, Mennonite Educational Institute Secondary (MEI), Rick Hansen Secondary, Robert Bateman Secondary, W. J. Mouat Secondary and Yale Secondary.
On June 18, the Abbotsford Board of Education awarded the ACF the 2019 Community Matters award in recognition of their support over the past years by providing over 5,000 students with scholarships and bursaries totalling more than $5 million.
“We are honoured to have received this recognition and will continue to help students further their post-secondary aspirations and dreams” said John Morrow, chair of the Student Awards committee and director on the ACF Board.
