Taking a look back at the storied history of Abbotsford’s community newspaper

The 13th edition of what is now known as The Abbotsford News was published on March 17 one century ago.

The Vancouver-based B.C. United Oil Company were in town inspecting their company’s drilling rig and equipment located on McCallum Road. The company was going to employ a crew of men and drill to a depth of 5,000 feet. They believed it likely that natural gas would be found locally.

The Peardonville Community Hall had a large crowd for its hard time dance event on March 10. Attendees were asked to dress as hobos. Mrs. Mariette won the ladies prize and was “neatly patched up,” while Mr. Little earned the men’s prize and he looked “very hard up indeed.” A masquerade dance was scheduled for the PCH on March 24.

A fire destroyed a large boarding house in Kilgard on March 16. A group of women were praised for noticing the blaze and both the boarding house and items in storage that were owned by the community church were damaged.

The Road to London – a 1921 drama movie – arrived at the Abbotsford Theatre starting on March 17. The movie told the story of an American millionaire visiting London who falls in love with a young aristocrat and elopes with her, pursued by a rival suitor.

The annual banquet tendered by the ladies of the Matsqui Women’s Institute occurred on March 14, with husbands being treated to a menu “par excellence”. A number of toasts were made and the hall was decorated in an “atmosphere of beauty and refinement typically feminine.”

In world news, a giant fish measuring 78 feet in length and weighing 15 tons recently washed ashore at Cape May, N.J. The brief notes that its weight was equal to five full grown elephants.

The province of Saskatchewan reported a good harvest from this past fall, with a total of 37,102,500 bushels of grain handled and distributed.

St. Matthew’s Chuch announced they will be presenting “The Crucifixion” on Good Friday. The production will be based on Sir John Stainer’s works. A choir will also be on hand for the show.

A recipe for fried raisin cheese sandwiches was shared on page four.
