A dinner takes place Friday, May 27 in Abbotsford to raise funds to renovate a 20-person Alzheimer’s unit at Tabor Village.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for the event at Bakerview Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd. Featured speaker is Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong, B.C. finance minister.

Special music is by Lisa -Dawn Kiltau, who provides a mix of opera, dinner theatre, art songs and hymns.

The money raised will go towards a facelift to the Cherry Lane memory care neighbourhood to improve the living environment to feel less like an institution and more like home.

Proposed renovations will allow residents easier access to outdoor spaces, including a dementia-friendly garden, and will see the addition of a therapeutic spa.

Common areas will be redesigned to include a den, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen which will see more of the residents’ meals prepared right in Cherry Lane.

“The classical nursing-home layout, traditionally modeled after the hospital, needs an overhaul to serve aging seniors well, especially those with dementia,” said Dan Levitt, executive director.“Creating a household model instead returns seniors to the comforts of home that they’re used to, and to an improved level of wellness.”

Tickets for the dinner are $25. For more information, visit taborvillage.org or call 604-859-8715.
