St. James elementary school in Abbotsford hosted a school-wide chess tournament on Monday.

The school chess club started in November and ran through the winter months.

The three levels of players – Pawn, Knight  and Kings – met once a week to learn about chess and play against their classmates for points.

These points translated into an eventual rating that earned them a place in the Chess Madness tournament.

More than 60 kids from Grades 1 to 7 played against each other in the tourney.

One boy in Grade 2, Pablo Longoria, made it all the way to the final eight, beating opponents in Grades 6 and 7 with ease.

The final four students were Nitheela Thiru, Andrew Keras, Tommy Nguyen and Luca Rinaldo.

Tommy and Luca battled it out in the final, held on the school stage for all to see, with Luca taking the championship.
