The following is a list of just some of the activities taking place in Abbotsford over the following week


The Abbotsford Social Activity Association (ASAA) hosts dances every Friday from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at its hall, 33889 Essendene Ave. Cost is $6 for members and $7 for non-members.  There is no dance on April 3 due to Good Friday, but bands for the rest of the month are: Johnny Hsu (April 10), Sweetwater (April 17) and Midnite Eagles (April 24).  Info: Frank at 820-8695


The Fraser Valley Food Truck Festival takes place at Abbotsford Centre (33800 King Rd.) on Saturday, April 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. About 20 different food trucks will be featured, as well as local artisans and family entertainment. Admission is $2 for adults and free for kids under 13. Info:

Abby Dads introduces a new program called  “Dads in Gear,” starting Tuesday, April 7. The free program runs every week from 7 to 9 p.m. for eight weeks  and is focused on being a healthy and smoke-free dad. A free fitness consultant will be at each session. The program is open to dads-to-be or dads with at least one child six years old and under, and who are currently smoking or using a vaporizer.  Free on-site childcare is provided. The Abbotsford branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association meets Tuesday, April 7 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Central Heights Church, 1661 McCallum Rd.  Speaker Jim Harte, a pharmacist, will discuss devices available to aid in self-care for diabetics, as well as tips on meaningful glucometer testing. The Valley Permaculture Guild meets Tuesday, April 7 at Edenvale, 4460 Bradner Rd. Plant finding runs from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner. Info:


Abbotsford Learning Plus presents two classes next week in its fall series. The sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon at Abbotsford Recreation Centre (ARC), 2499 McMillan Rd. The topic on Tuesday, April 7 is “A Long Way to Tipperary: The Great War in Canada.” The topic on Thursday, April 9 is “The Asian Fair Trade Movement.” Cost for each class is $5, plus the $2 ARC drop-in fee. The Skills Connect Program for immigrants holds an information session on Tuesday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at Abbotsford Community Services, 2420 Montrose Ave. The program helps participants with finding work in their field of expertise,  job-search techniques, courses and more. The Shape Your World Society holds a movie night on Friday, April 10 to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters and for the Total Makeover Challenge currently underway. Doors open at 6 p.m. at Christine Morrison elementary, 32611 McRae Ave. in Mission. Big Hero 6 will be shown. Cost is $2.50, including popcorn and juice. The B.C. Gem Show takes place in Abbotsford  from April 10 to 12 at Ag-Rec Building at Exhibition Park, 32470 Haida Drive. The event includes displays, demos, grab bags, a children’s creative workshop, gold panning and door prizes. Doors open at 10 a.m. each day. The Ex-Brits Club meets three times a month in Abbotsford. The group gets together at 11:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the Abbotsford Legion, the third Wednesday at Jo Jo’s Fish and Chips, and the last Saturday at the ABC restaurant on Marshall Road.
