Several local students earn medals at Skills Canada BC

Several Abbotsford students won medals at the Skills Canada BC competition at Tradex last Wednesday.

The annual event drew more than 600 students in Grades 6 to 12 to compete in 58 fields such as aerospace, automotive, 3D animation, baking, welding, robotics and more.

The participants were all gold-medal winners from regional competitions held earlier this year, including the Fraser Valley event that took place March 1 at University of the Fraser Valley in Chilliwack.

Gold-medal winners at the provincial competition now advance to the Skills Canada National Competition, running June 4 and 5 in Edmonton.

Abbotsford students who won medals at Skills Canada BC were:

– Sonia Khurana and Jaskiran Chauhan of Abbotsford Senior – gold in TV/video production;

– Gibi Saini, Manroop Singh, Shawn Kharud, Nathan Ellis and Brendan Rauch from Abbotsford Senior Secondary – gold in the junior skills GearBots competition;

– Bailey Cryer and Hayden Fast from Robert Bateman Secondary – silver in 3D computer animation;

– Kurtis Stevenson from W. J. Mouat Secondary (WJMS) – silver in architectural CAD;

– Arianna Guenette from Abbotsford School of the Integrated Arts – silver in architectural CAD;

– Natalie Neufeld, Katie Wiebe, Nyah Hilz and Melissa Thomas of Chief Dan George Middle Schools – silver in junior skills spaghetti bridge competition;

– Rheis Setter and Kobe Lightfoot of WJMS – bronze in TV/video production;

– Isaac Moorhouse from WJMS – bronze in carpentry; and

– Matthias LeClair from WJMS – bronze in electrical wiring.
