An Fraser Valley dad of four wants to help people get rid of their unwanted stuff and raise money for charities at the same time.
John Perlinger, 37, formerly of Abbotsford and now living in Chilliwack, has created a website, Charitables.com, where people can sell their things – or services – and have the money go to a good cause.
He says it’s a win-win for everyone.
“Buyers can search for items where they know the money is going to something they’re passionate about, and sellers can feel great about themselves and also receive a tax receipt,” Perlinger said.
Here’s how it works: Charities can use the site to create a fundraising goal with a timeline.
They then send out a link to previous donors, asking them to use the site as a virtual garage sale. When a sale takes place, the proceeds go to the charity.
Perlinger said one charity has so far come on board to launch a campaign, but he’s hoping to reach more charities and help more people.
“I’m very hopeful that one day we will be a nationally recognized platform and a household name in Canada,” he said.
Perlinger said he came up with the idea while meditating about two years ago, but didn’t start actively pursuing it until attending a Tony Robbins seminar and telling himself that he “was no longer going to be afraid to try something big.”
The website launched at the end of July.
