The 10th anniversary celebration of the Scandinavian Club of the Fraser Valley took place on Nov. 14.
SCOTFV is a club where people of Scandinavian origin, as well as many with an interest in those five countries, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark, congregate.
Ernie Poignant, with his wife Rose, in front of 45 members and guests, cut the anniversary cake. Poignant recently received a lifetime Arty Award from the Abbotsford Arts Council. He has been drawing historical cartoons about Abbotsford and its surroundings for many years. With his Swedish background, he is a loyal member of SCOTFV.
The SCOTFV grew out of the international Swedish lodge, Vasa, in 2001. The first home was the Rebecca Hall. In 2003 the club moved to the better facilities at the Eagles Hall, and from there to the present location in 2008 at the Masonic Hall, 33860 Pine St., as the Eagles wanted to renovate their facility.
On the second Monday of each month, except July and August, the members meet for a potluck dinner, which always include some Scandinavian dishes.
A second part of the evenings is an entertaining program about Scandinavia. This could take the form of a video, talks or music. Each month one of the countries is celebrated, both in terms of food and entertainment.
