Mike Adkins of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford was among those who travelled to Guatemala and Antigua last year to distribute wheelchairs to 280 people.

Several local Rotary Clubs are participating in a project to donate 280 wheelchairs to individuals and hospitals in Guatemala.

The project previously took place in February 2015, when six members of the Abbotsford-Sumas Rotary Club assembled and delivered 280 wheelchairs to Guatemala City and Antigua.

The items were purchased by the club’s partner Inspired by Vision (Grand Prairie), the Rotary Club of Chilliwack and the Rotary Club of Abbotsford.

Several Rotary members will return to Guatemala in February 2017 to assemble and deliver another 280 chairs.

The same groups are participating in this endeavour as in 2105 and are joined by the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Matsqui.

The wheelchairs are crafted to be extra durable and to endure the harsh terrain of rural roads.

Thanks to the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation, these special wheelchairs can be delivered anywhere in the world at a cost of $195 per chair, compared to the retail value of $600.
