The 2011 Rice Raiser campaign kicks off this weekend at the Sumas Village Save-on-Foods.

The grocery store has supplied 1,000 kilograms of rice to be purchased and donated to the Abbotsford Food Bank for $5 a bag. All money raised supports the work of Hunger Response International in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Mexico.

Rice Raiser is a youth mobilized community event designed to increase awareness about global hunger. It started out as a pilot program in 2005 with students from MEI Secondary School. The class raised enough cash to feed 3,000 people in a developing country for a week, while 842 kilograms of packaged rice filled the local food bank shelves for a couple months.

Fifteen Abbotsford schools are currently participating in the Rice Raiser Campaign this year.
