A rally against the sexual exploitation of children and youth takes place in Abbotsford on March 9.

The Fraser Valley Community Action Team against the sexual exploitation of children and youth (FVCAT) hosts a public rally on Wednesday, March 9.

Participants are asked to meet at Abbotsford Community Services (ACS), 2420 Montrose Ave., in the Youth Resource Centre basement.

The rally starts at 3:30 p.m. with remarks by Sheila Lum from ACS and Sgt. Casey Vinet of the Abbotsford Police Department.

Lum, chair of FVCAT, says sexual exploitation is the exchange of a sexual act for money, drugs, food, shelter, transportation, love, acceptance or any other consideration.

She said sexual exploitation of children and youth is not a female-specific issue. Males and transgendered youth are also sexually exploited.

“Sexual exploitation of youth is happening behind closed doors. We need to be aware that sexual exploitation of our youth is happening in our community,” she said.

“With awareness, we can reduce the numbers and put an end to the sexual exploitation of our youth.”

The rally continues with a march towards “Five Corners”  and concludes with refreshments.
