The fur brigades arrived at Fort Langley Monday with historical re-enactors re-tracing the trip the original fur traders made in the late 1800s for the annual Brigade Days celebration.

Admission to the historic fort at 23433 Mavis Ave. was free to commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday.

Visitors could see laundry done by hand with a washboard and wringer, enjoy folk songs and stories and mingle with performers demonstrating the old-time arts of sewing, laundry, weapons, blacksmithing and cooking.

There was a fashion show devoted to the art of old-school dressing up.

On Monday afternoon, there was a bagpipe procession down to the Fraser River shore, to witness a re-enactment of the arrival of the fur brigades that included canoes and a replica York boat that travelled from Hope to Fort Langley.

Last year, in recognition of the support provided by Kurt and Brenda Alberts to the Bedford Rowing Society, the York boat was renamed the “Brenda A” in memory of the art gallery owner and community volunteer who passed away in July of 2016 after a short battle with cancer.

Kurt Alberts was on the deck of the “Brenda A” as she arrived.

The boat actually arrived two days early, and tied up at a float plane dock upriver until its scheduled arrival time Monday.
