With over a decade of experience, nurse practitioner Danielle Mlinaritsch brings a strong background and a wealth of knowledge to the internal medicine unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH).

She joined the team as its first-ever nurse practitioner at the beginning of January.

"One of the biggest distinctions of the nurse practitioner role is the ability to merge the worlds of nursing and medicine," Mlinaritsch says.

"It is a very holistic role because I can assess, diagnose and manage patient conditions by combining a comprehensive understanding of patient care with advanced clinical expertise."

Collaboration is at the heart of her work.

Mlinaritsch supports patients and works collaboratively with the clinical team by ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, performing specialized procedures like chest tube insertions, and regularly updating patients and their loved ones.

"Having a nurse practitioner in internal medicine helps bridge gaps by offering an additional layer of support through timely interventions and improving patient access and care flow," Mlinaritsch says.

Mlinaritsch serves as a key resource for nurses, helping them navigate complex cases and offering mentorship based on her critical care expertise.

She collaborates with all members of the care team including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers and specialists to ensure seamless patient care.

She also plays an important role in maintaining patient flow and ensuring smooth care transitions, as patients in the internal medicine unit often require care from cardiology, nephrology and other medical specialties.

Mlinaritsch says the connection she builds with patients and their families is one of the most rewarding aspects of her role.

"I listen, counsel and guide them through difficult moments. It is not just about treating a condition but about making sure patients and their families feel heard, supported and know that their loved one is being cared for," she says.

Patients recognize her as an advocate for their care, reinforcing the importance of nurse practitioners in health care.

"We are seeing first-hand how nurse practitioners like Danielle are significantly enhancing support for our patients, nursing staff and physicians," says Dr. Euiseok Kim, local department head of internal medicine at ARH.

"Her presence positively impacts our internal medicine unit as she helps ensure patients receive timely care. Through our multidisciplinary teams, we are well-equipped to provide comprehensive support for patients with complex medical needs."

Fraser Health currently employs 200 nurse practitioners across acute care; specialized and community clinics; primary and urgent care; and mental health and substance-use services.

Plans are under way to hire a second nurse practitioner for the internal medicine unit at ARH.
