More than 80 people received free dental work valued at more than $35,000 on Friday in Abbotsford.

The service was provided by Clayburn Dental, and resulted in people lining up as early as 4 p.m. the day before for the service, which ran on a first-come, first-served basis.

The service was open to those 18 years or older who can’t get dental care elsewhere.

Stephen Wall, marketing director of Clayburn Dental, said most of the patients wanted a cleaning and exam, because they typically only come to the dentist in emergency situations.

He said one man who began lining up at 5 p.m. the night before needed six teeth extracted, which would have cost him $1,300.

“You’re used to seeing people line up all night for deals on TVs and games, but it was amazing to see people camp out for free dentistry. It shows how much a service like this is needed and appreciated,” Wall said.

This was the first time the dental office had offered the service, and staff members were unsure of what to expect, Wall said.

“Many of the staff said it was one of the most rewarding days of their careers.”

Wall said Clayburn Dental plans to make it an annual event.
