Habitat for Humanity – Upper Fraser Valley is planning to construct affordable housing in Mission.

Mission Council has approved the sale of land (located near the intersection of Cedar Valley Connector and Briskham Street) to Habitat for Humanity to support the housing project.

The property will allow for the construction of a multi-family development, providing a hand up for hard working low-income families in Mission.

“Council is committed to seeing an increase in safe and affordable housing in Mission, and are proud to have Habitat for Humanity Upper Fraser Valley as partners in our community,” said Mayor Randy Hawes. “We support Habitat for Humanity, and believe in their model that brings community partners and future homeowners together to build stronger communities.”

Established in 2000, Habitat for Humanity - Upper Fraser Valley has grown from a fledgling affiliate with a single home under its belt to a full-grown affiliate that has established seven homes and multiple renovation and restoration projects.

Habitat has operated a ReStore for over 10 years and just recently bought its new expanded location.

Habitat has a biannual gala event, and an annual triathlon. The non-profit has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for those in B.C. and abroad, and is looking forward breaking ground on this multi-family development in Mission.

“Habitat is pleased to have such amazing support from the District of Mission Council and staff. What they are doing is an example of social responsibility that should be a lesson to other communities throughout our nation,” said Habitat chief executive officer Doug Rempel. “Seeing a need and partnering with Habitat not only helps towards solving the affordable housing crisis, but also builds community by bringing residents and businesses together for a great cause. Habitat is appealing to residents and businesses for donations of cash and building supplies. All of our overhead is financed with the sales from our Restore so every single penny donated goes directly to building affordable housing.”

The District will advertise the sale for two weeks as required under the Community Charter, and will work to complete the sale on August 2, 2016.

Additional details on the project will be presented to the public when a rezoning application comes forward, and the public will have the opportunity to comments as part of the public hearing process.
