Mission celebrates 120 years

Saturday, Sept. 29 marks the celebration of Mission’s 120th birthday bash.

The first bylaw enacted by the District of Mission council in 1892 involved horse racing on Sundays and it will be on display at Heritage Park Centre on Saturday, Sept. 29 as part of the celebration of Mission’s 120th birthday bash.

The event gets underway at noon with the Mission Pipe Band and will end in the evening with the band Tiller’s Folly. There is no charge for any of the festivities and the organizing committee has included events for the whole family. The parks, recreation and culture department will be hosting an old-fashioned sports day.

Families can also challenge each other as they make their way through an obstacle course.

Rags to Radio will join Random Dander on the Loop stage set up outside the facility. There will be a celebratory birthday cake, hot dogs and refreshments served by the Mission 2014 B.C. Winter Games Committee.

Inside, history unfolds in the lobby of the facility with displays from the Mission Archives, Museum, Soapbox Derby, Arts Council, Lifetime Learning, Mission Chamber of Commerce, Fraser Valley Regional Library and the Rotary Clubs of Mission.  Photos, short films and displays of the last 120 years will be featured.

In the evening,  performances by Fraser Valley Academy of Dance, CanDance, Serenata Singers, Joy Vox Choir and Tiller’s Folly will take place.
