The Mennonite Historical Society of BC welcomes the public to a free lecture by Hans Werner on Sunday, Nov. 4.
The lecture starts at 2:30 p.m. at Level Ground Mennonite Church at 31216 King Rd.
The topic is controversial: “Mennonites in Stalin’s and Hitler’s Armies.”
During the horrific years of war between Germany and the Soviet Union, some Russian Mennonite men served in either of these two armies, and sometimes in both.
“There were seemingly no choices left for them,” Werner says. “They were literally ‘caught.’ ”
Werner and his wife live in Winnipeg, where he taught Canadian History and Mennonite Studies at the University of Winnipeg.
