Cyrus Centre for at-risk youth holds its sixth annual Leap of Faith skydiving event on Thursday, July 9 to raise funds for its locations in Abbosford and Chilliwack.

Participants are asked to collect a minimum of $700 in pledges to tandem parachute out of a plane at  Skydive Vancouver’s drop zone at 5112 Gladwin Rd. in Abbotsford. The event starts at 5 p.m.

All funds raised by Abbotsford jumpers go to the Abbotsford Cyrus Centre. Funds raised by Chilliwack jumpers go to the Chilliwack Cyrus Centre.

Executive director Les Talvio said the two centres are holding a challenge to see who can raise the most money and attract the most jumpers.

Another challenge is being conducted by two Chilliwack churches – City Life and Central Community – with the losing pastor having to wear the winning pastor’s garb at one of their sermons.

Other activities at the Leap of Faith include a bouncy castle, face painting, a kids’ corner and a barbecue by donation, with proceeds going to Abbotsford’s Cyrus House, which provides semi-independent housing for youth 16 and older in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Last year’s Leap of Faith raised about $15,000.

The two Cyrus Centre locations are financially independent of one another, but offer the same type of programs and services for youth ages 12 to 18.
