The Kidney Foundation of Canada hosts its annual Kidney Walk at Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford on Sunday, Aug. 24.

The event offers two options – a 2.5 km walk or a 5 km fun run. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the event starts at 10 a.m.

The Kidney Walk is held annually to raise funds for critical programs and services for British Columbians affected by kidney disease and for their families.

The walk also helps to raise awareness and education about the seriousness of the disease and the importance of organ donation.

According to the Kidney Foundation, one in 10 B.C. residents has kidney disease, and more than 3,000 people in B.C. need kidney dialysis to live.

Among those participating in the Kidney Walk will be the family of three-year-old Logyn, who was diagnosed with kidney disease at age two.

The family makes an average of eight trips to the hospital every month. His kidney disease is accelerating, and mom Kirstin knows he will need a transplant in order to live.

Logyn’s daily routine includes feeding through a tube three times a day, medication four times a day, and special formula three times a day.

Kirstin says her spunky son is her “kidney warrior.” She is an active supporter of the Kidney Foundation, advocating for awareness of kidney disease and support for further research.

“The work that the (foundation) does symbolizes hope for a better future for my son,” she said.
