Heritage Abbotsford Society has received funding from the Canada Post Community Foundation towards a new heritage-themed storytime series for children ages two to five.

The funds will be used to facilitate Time Adventurers’ Club, a monthly offering of fun, hands-on drop-in storytime sessions at the Clearbrook Library on Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18.

The society took aim at the youngest crowd, who may otherwise not be exposed to this type of hands-on experience, and created a series of storytimes just for them.

Christina Reid, who will lead the program, is Heritage Abbotsford Society’s executive director.

She will bring historic artifacts from the museum’s educational collection to the Clearbrook Library.

Along with games, songs and books, these artifacts will introduce the children to historic concepts, new vocabulary, and literacy.

“Time and time again, studies have shown that literacy and exposure to a broader vocabulary aids in brain development at this young age,” Reid said.

“This is a fantastic way to build self-confidence, social intelligence and, quite simply, have fun.”

Heritage Abbotsford Society is the not-for-profit organization that operates Trethewey House Heritage Site on a fee for service with the City of Abbotsford.

Through the generosity of their customers, the Canada Post Community Foundation is able to fund important programs in communities across the country every year.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have received this financial support from the foundation,” Reid said. “This will really help us take the program to the next level.”
