Group raises funds for 2013 trip to Romania

Pathways Abbotsford plans to work with adults and children with disabilities and their families.

A local group for adults with developmental disabilities is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, June 9 for a trip to Romania next year.

Abbotsford Pathways is planning to travel to the country in May 2013 to tour and speak at schools, visit families and work in a community centre in Hunedoara, where they will support at-risk children and adults.

The local group, calling themselves "Team Romania," will also visit Casa Harului, a camp for adults with disabilities and their families.

Eight participants and their supporters are going on the two-week journey.

“This is truly a remarkable undertaking, and it is probably the first time it has been done," said Virginia Sawatsky, Pathways program manager. "Our team members will be able to build relationships and show people in Romania what is possible. They want to offer hope and dignity to families and people with disabilities.”

The group plans to hold various fundraising events over the next year to raise the estimated cost of $3,000 per person.

One of these is a Burger and Brew event this Saturday at Station House Pub and Grill (3122 Station Rd.), starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Virginia Sawatsky at virginia@pacific-pathways.com or call 604-533-3602.
