Local MLAs proclaimed the first Every Girl Matters Day at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford on Friday.

The GirlKind Foundation of Abbotsford hosted a celebration for the day on Oct. 11, after the organization asked the provincial government to proclaim the day throughout B.C., in conjunction with the UN’s Day of the Girl.

The days are both intended to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face around the world.

Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong and Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson presented the proclamation to members of the foundation.

Deesh Sekhon, founder of the GirlKind Foundation, said the proclamation sends a strong message that B.C. is a province “that stands up to the injustices that girls face in their own local backyards as well as our global backyards.”

Throughout October, GirlKind is holding a worldwide Every Girl Matters photo campaign, asking the public to participate in answering the question as to why girls matter.

More information on the campaign is available on the website at girlkind.org.
