Community members can gather to pray and raise funds Sunday for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, a devastating storm that hit the Philippines in early November.
The Light of Hope fundraiser will be held on Dec. 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the chapel of Columbia Bible College at 2940 Clearbrook Rd.
Med Manzanal, diversity co-ordinator for the city of Abbotsford, came to Canada from the Philippines about two years ago. Although her immediate family was not impacted by the typhoon, she is concerned for her countrymen and is among those supporting the fundraiser.
Manzanal said Abbotsford has more than 1,000 Filipinos and many members have come together to organize the event.
She said while they hope to fundraise, they also want people to gather in “prayer and solidarity” with the people of the Philippines.
All the proceeds will go to the Canadian Red Cross and will be matched by the government dollar for dollar.
Tax receipts will be available for donations of $20 and above.
