Yale Secondary in Abbotsford holds a free-throw event on March 2 and 3.

A basketball free-throw competition takes place at Yale Secondary on March 2 and 3 to raise money for the Best Buddies club.

The Hooping It Up event runs at 10:55 and 11:40 a.m. and is open to students with special needs.

For a $2 entry fee, participants aim to sink as many free throws as possible in one minute as their fellow students cheer from the stands.

Three national grand prizes of $500 will be awarded to the top shooters across the country, as well as individual prizes for participating schools.

Last year, more than 130 schools took part across Canada, involving more than 8,400 students and raising about $25,000.

Best Buddies Canada is a national charity that helps to foster friendships between individuals with special needs and student volunteers.

Through the program, students with special needs enjoy experiences such as going to the mall, watching a movie and enjoying the company of a friend.
