Two Abbotsford students won gold medals and two took bronze at the recent Skills Canada competition in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The event took place May 28 and 29 at the Halifax Exhibition Centre and drew gold-medal winners from provincial competitions across Canada.
Skills Canada gold medals went to Sonia Khurana and Ashneet Lalli from Abbotsford Senior Secondary. They competed together in video production.
Their topic for the first day was to create a video of between 1:30 and 1:45 minutes in length in seven hours, with the topic of persuading parents that a career in skilled trades and technology is a viable choice.

Their topic for the second day of competition was to create a 45-second “Top 5” video in four hours. They chose to explore the top five jobs right now in construction trades in Canada.

The pair now qualify to compete at the World Skills competition in Kazan, Russia from Aug. 22 to 27.
Winning bronze medals at the national event were Allen Lin from Robert Bateman Secondary in automotive technology and Blake Gervais from W. J. Mouat Secondary in architectural technology and design.
The four students all qualified for the national competition after winning gold medals at the Skills Canada BC event on April 23 at Tradex in Abbotsford.
Also winning gold medals at the provincial level and advancing to the nationals were Leandro Gerbrand from Abby Senior in carpentry and Taylor Smith from Robert Bateman in electrical wiring.
They did not place in the top three at the Skills Canada competition.
