The staff doctor at Foundry Youth Health Centre in Abbotsford is releasing a new book that looks at the science behind emotions and how they impact well-being.
Dr. Shahana Alibhai’s book Feel Better will be released on Amazon on Sept. 26. Partial proceeds from every book sold will go towards youth initiatives.
Alibhai describes the book as a “roadmap” to understanding emotions and how they impact day-to-day life “starting with acknowledgement, awareness, acceptance and finally action.”
“We all deserve to feel better. Emotional literacy is more than just understanding our feelings; it’s about harnessing them to foster better mental health and improve our daily lives,” she said.
Alibhai was mentored by New York Times bestselling author Adrian Gostick to write Feel Better.
Alibhai is a professional speaker, family doctor and mental-health expert.
She has worked with several national organizations – including the University of B.C., Scotiabank and Remax – to help people gain more clarity into their mental health.
She is best known for her “Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health” TEDx talk and as a panelist for International Women’s Day.
Alibhai has served on the UBC faculty of medicine residency training program and is currently a national accreditor for the College of Canadian Family Physicians.
She blends her personal story of postpartum anxiety and the resulting shame, denial and mental-health challenges with her professional background in cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness meditation.
