The Abbotsford chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is welcoming new members as it prepares to host the provincial annual general meeting in May.

The group, which celebrated its 70th anniversary in May 2023, meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The meetings are usually held in building K at University of the Fraser Valley.

Guest speakers are scheduled at the monthly meetings, focusing on topics of community and global importance.

There are also opportunities to sign up for group activities such as bridge, theatre, book clubs, lunch groups, golf, hiking and gardening. No university degree is required to join.

The local chapter was founded in 1953 and offers a forum for women of all ages to meet for fellowship, networking and involvement in the community.

The National CFUW, founded in 1919, has more than 10,000 members in 122 clubs across Canada.

The volunteer non-profit organization is affiliated with Graduate Women International, which has special consultative status at the United Nations.

The goal for all three levels of club membership (local, provincial and national) is to provide leadership and support to women around the world and in their local communities, through advocacy, awards and bursaries.

The Abbotsford chapter gives an annual scholarship and an annual bursary to two mature female students returning to university to help them continue their education.

The Abbotsford CFUW Club hosts the provincial annual general meeting from May 2 to 4 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre.

Delegates from across the province will have the opportunity to participate in local tours and to listen to presentations on topics relating to global and local importance.

Entertainment will be a highlight of the Saturday evening dinner.

This is an opportunity for clubs across B.C. to celebrate friendship, advocacy goals and volunteerism.

Contact cfuwmembershipabb@gmail.com for more information on the local chapter.
