The SPCA is encouraging the public to consider adopting an adult cat during a special promotion running until Oct. 14.

Kittens are cute, but with an abundance of felines across the province, the BC SPCA is hoping an upcoming adoption promotion will encourage people to consider adopting an adult cat – or even two.

The promotion, presented by Hill’s Science Diet, began Oct. 1 and runs until Oct. 14 at all BC SPCA branches, including the one in Abbotsford. During the campaign, adoption fees are 50 per cent off for all adult cats.

“We’ve currently got more than 1,700 cats and kittens in foster care and in our shelters, with more waiting to come in each day,” says BC SPCA director of regional operations Jane Talbot.

“We’re hoping this promotion will encourage anyone who has been considering cat adoption to take the next step and make it a reality.”

Talbot said the usual adoption criteria will apply.

“We always try to find the best match with personality, lifestyle and what the potential pet guardian is looking for, but the best reason is, adult cats deserve love, too,” she said.

Talbot said adopting an adult cat instead of a kitten has many benefits – they’re calmer and more settled, litter trained, fully grown and their personalities are already developed, so potential adopters know exactly what they’re getting.

The Abbotsford SPCA shelter is located at 34312 Industrial Way. It is open daily from noon to 4:30 p.m., but is closed Mondays.
