Abbotsford’s Canada Day celebrations continues to grow each year and on Monday, council honoured the winners of this year’s parade contest with trophies and more cash than ever before.

“We have a lot of great sponsors and volunteers that make this happen,” said Coun. Lynne Harris, who chairs the Canada Day committee.

The big winner this year was the MEI Screaming Eagles marching band, which took the overall grand prize of $3,000.

Other cash prizes included:

  • 1st place in the general category: Out of Many Productions (a local Caribbean dance group) – $600;
  • 2nd place in the general category: Abbotsford Youth Orchestra – $300;
  • 3rd place in the general category: Fraser Valley Korean Association – $150.

Other, non-financial awards were handed out to the following:

  • Best non-profit service club – The Baha’i Faith;
  • Best commercial business – Keller Williams Realty;
  • Best musical group – Abbotsford Collegiate Drum Line.

Harris called the event a great day for the community and a family event that everyone can participate in.

Planning for next year’s parade and day-long festival will get underway in late September.
