Abbotsford Community Library announced a free event that lets children read to therapy dogs.

The Abbotsford Community Library will soon be filled with not only books but fluffy friends as well as it prepares to host the first "Who Let the Dogs In" event of the year.

This series brings kids and therapy dogs together for some reading time that benefits everyone.

According to the Abbotsford Community Library site, spending even a few minutes reading to a dog can help build a child's confidence and self-esteem.

One or two children at a time will get to read to certified child therapy dogs from St. John Ambulance training centre.

Each session lasts 20 minutes, with kids only able to participate if they register beforehand. Registration for this event opens on Jan. 3 and can be found at fvrl.bibliocommons.com/events.

The first "Who Let the Dogs In" event of the year takes place on Thursday, Jan. 9, from 3 to 4 p.m.

If someone isn't able to attend this one, there will be several more of these events throughout the year.
