The Abbotsford Heat are trading in their skates for razors.

On Saturday, April 2, following the home game versus the Grand Rapids Griffins, members of the Heat will have their heads shaved – for a price.

For every $500 raised for the BC Cancer Agency at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, another player will have his head buzzed.

If a business donates in one lump sum, they automatically get the honours of shearing off the locks themselves.

And for fans wanting to get in on the action, they can have their heads shaved by a Heat player with a minimum $50 donation.

While the topic of cancer hits close to home for many, it’s personal for goalie Leland Irving. He battled cancer at seven years old.

His mother discovered a lump above his ear, and after a biopsy, they discovered it was cancerous.

He was diagnosed with an often terminal cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma.

After the tumour was removed, he endured over a year of chemotherapy and has now been cancer-free for 13 years.

“This disease touches everyone and I want to be able to do whatever I can to give back to organizations that assist children and families like they did when I went through this,” said Irving.
