An Abbotsford man will attempt to Conquer the Volcano to raise funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association, starting this week.
Kim Konias will be among the participants with a Team Diabetes trek through Rincon de la Vieja National Park in Costa Rica from May 5 to 9. The region is known for having one of the largest volcanoes in the country.
This is Konias’ fourth event with Team Diabetes. He started in 2008, when his daughter Meegan – a type 1 (juvenile) diabetic – suggested they participate in a half-marathon in Rio de Janeiro.
The following year, Konias completed a full marathon in Prague for Team Diabetes. Last year, he ran another marathon in Reykjavik, Iceland.
“I keep coming back to Team Diabetes because I know how much awareness and funds it raises.
“The completion of each event is very emotional and it brings hope and the feeling that a cure can be found,” said Konias, who owns an A & W restaurant in Abbotsford.
Teams Diabetes holds numerous events throughout the world each year, raising funds for education and services. For more information, visit teamdiabetes.ca or call Rebecca at 604-732-1331 (local 246).
