Alzheimer Society hosts family caregiver workshop

Session begins at Garden Park Tower in Abbotsford on Tuesday, June 2

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is holding a family caregiver workshop in Abbotsford for four Tuesdays, beginning June 2.

The workshop runs from 2 to 4 p.m. until June 30 (there is no session on June 23) at Garden Park Tower, 2825 Clearbrook Rd.

The program helps caregivers learn strategies to care for someone with dementia and to take care of their own health.

"We provide practical techniques and strategies that caregivers can begin using immediately," said Jude Weir, the society's support and education co-ordinator for Abbotsford and Mission.

Topics include: understanding Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, effective and creative ways of facilitating communication with a person with dementia, understanding behaviour as a form of communication, self-care for the caregiver and planning for the future.
