Abbotsford volunteer Caryn Zimmerman dies at 56

Fights eight-month battle with skin cancer

A well-known community volunteer died on June 27 at the age of 56 after an eight-month battle with cancer.

Caryn Zimmerman volunteered over the years with numerous organizations and events in Abbotsford, including the 861 Silverfox Air Cadet Squadron, Abbotsford Agrifair, the BC Summer Games, the Terry Fox Run, Tourism Abbotsford, Connect Now Networking and many others.

Zimmerman was known for her friendly smile, energetic voice and for an ability to connect with anyone she came across.

She worked in the travel and tourism industry for almost 20 years, putting together many tours during that time.

She was also involved in the parents’ advisory councils at both John Maclure Community School and W. J. Mouat Secondary, as well as helping out with the graduation celebrations and activities for both of her children – Ashley, 29, and Nikolaus, 27.

Ashley said her mom’s passing has come as a shock to many. She was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in October 2016.

“While Mom was very outgoing in the community, she also did not want to be a burden on people in asking for help … With this, her request was to keep this a fairly private battle,” she said.

Zimmerman is also survived by her husband of 35 years, Ed.

A tropical-themed party in her memory will be held Sunday, July 16 from 2 to 6 p.m. Email for location information.

In lieu of flowers, Zimmerman’s family asks that donations be made to the Abbotsford branch of the SPCA.
