An Abbotsford resident is the recipient of Propsera Credit Union’s Ron Sweeney Rising Star Award.

The award goes to Sydney Toews from W. J. Mouat Secondary. Toews is an artistic young woman who uses her talents to help others, including auctioning off a specially commissioned piece of her work to raise $1,400 for the charity Run for Water.

She also volunteers with the Abbotsford Food Bank and in 2014, she travelled to Mexico, where she helped out with several projects at an orphanage.

Toews plans to pursue her passion for the arts at Capilano University.

The Ron Sweeney Rising Star Award is named for long-time Prospera Credit Union director Ron Sweeney, who passed away last November at the age of 90 and was highly dedicated to the community in a myriad of roles.
