The Abbotsford branch of the Royal Canadian Legion celebrated the 70th anniversary of D-Day with a luncheon attended by more than 60 veterans, legion members and guests on Friday, June 6.

Guest of honour Lt.-Col. Cliff Jamieson with the Canadian Forces Liaison Council was presented with a legion plaque of appreciation by branch president Geoff Hosking.

As well, branch first vice-president Thomas Buchenauer presented the branch with an aerial photo of Juno Beach taken on June 6, 1944.

D-Day marks the landings of more than 160,000 allied troops along a 50-mile stretch of coastline – including Juno Beach – to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France.

More than 9,000 allied soldiers were killed or wounded, but more than 100,000 soldiers then began the trek across Europe to defeat Adolf Hitler’s troops.
