Abbotsford Grand Squares raise almost $2,200 for Starfish Packs

Club held benefit dance

The Abbotsford Grand Squares raised almost $2,200 for the Starfish Pack Program during a benefit dance on March 8.

The event was held at the Abbotsford Social Activity Association (ASAA) hall.

The Starfish Pack Program, run by Archway Community Services, provides food-filled backpacks to local students for the weekend.

More than 700 packs are currently delivered each week to 42 elementary, middle and high schools throughout Abbotsford.

The program started in Abbotsford and is now in place in more than 24 cities across the province and in Whatcom County.

The program costs between $650 and $850 per student per school year, with the funds raised through donations from businesses, individuals and organizations like the Abbotsford Grand Squares.

Hundreds of volunteers shop, assemble and deliver the backpacks each week.

The Grand Squares began in 1981 at the OAP Hall and were then known as the Fraser Valley Square and Round Dance Association.

The group now meets twice a week – mainstream dancers on Mondays at 7 p.m. and “plus” dancers on Thursdays at 7 p.m. – at the ASAA hall at 33889 Essendene Ave.

They also hold special events, such as a benefit dance every March.

New dancers are invited to come out starting the second Monday of September each year, and can attend the first three classes for free. All classes are closed to new dancers after that.
