The HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society has received a $3,000 grant from the Abbotsford Community Foundation.

An animal rescue society has received a $3,000 grant from the Abbotsford Community Foundation.

The Abbotsford-based HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society received the money as part of the Mary Victoria Wakefield Animal Welfare Fund.

The money will be used towards spay and neuter services for dogs, helping to subsidize the cost or cover the full amount for people who are low income and cannot afford the procedure.

The spay and neuter program is open to all breeds and is part of HugABull’s Reach program, a community outreach service that helps people with items such as veterinary procedures, food and supplies (dog beds, collars, leashes and more).

The goal of the spay and neuter program is to reduce the pet overpopulation crisis that local shelters are experiencing.

The Reach program was launched in 2021 and so far has assisted with the spay and neuter of 64 animals (primarily dogs, but also a few cats).

HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society was founded in 2003 and is a community of volunteers committed to the rescue, advocacy and outreach for block-headed dogs such as boxers, bulldogs, bull mastiffs and Boston terriers.

The organization partners with local shelters and rescue organizations to take in dogs for fostering and, ultimately, match them with loving, forever homes.

HugABull also advocates for ethical rescue, the responsible guardianship of all breeds, and evidence-based, breed-neutral laws.

Through their outreach programs, they provide public education, spay and neuter initiatives and general support to communities.

HugABull is a registered charity and depends solely on donations and support. Although based in the Lower Mainland, the organization serves all of B.C.
