This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks.
Over the years, the group has proudly represented Canada, showcasing the professionalism, dedication and teamwork it takes to be a part of the Canadian Forces.
Across North America, the SkyHawks will be performing at over 30 shows in 2011, showcasing their thrilling and exciting act of parachute Canopy Relative Work.
Since its inception, the group has had many changes.
The most notable change took place in 1977 when the team traded the Para-Commander round parachute for the more manoeuvrable Ram-Air square parachute. This advance in team equipment allowed for more dynamic and crowd-pleasing performances. Canopy formations has been a major portion of demonstrations since the 1989 season.
But one part of the team that hasn’t changed is the signature of the SkyHawks: the Canadian Flag parachute.
The team has also achieved a number of successes, including the world’s most northerly demonstration jump at Canadian Forces Station Alert on the northern tip of Ellesmere Island on Sept. 19, 1982.
At the Abbotsford Airshow, fans can expect a colourful and exciting performance. For more information, visit www.skyhawks.forces.gc.ca.
