Competition is heating up at Burger Heaven in New Westminster.

Election season is in full swing in B.C., but nowhere are things heating up faster than at a New Westminster burger joint.

For the past 26 years, Burger Heaven has offered federal and provincial candidates on a platter in the restaurant’s burger poll.

"I believe it all started in the mid-1980s when Bill [Mural] was the original owner,” said manager Chris Geib. “He decided to throw a little political stance into his burgers to see how it would work out.”

Just like B.C.’s political system, the burger poll has three candidates.

The Christy Clark burger is the “lean-to-the-right,” complete with "a Liberal slab of BC Cheddar Cheese, Special CC Sauce and milder O(u)unions."

The NDP’s John Horgan gets the “lean-to-the-left” burger, topped with "strong o(u)nions), red tomato, sharp slice of BC mozzarella and a dollop of H-organ-ic mango habenero sauce.”

Green Party leader Andrew Weaver "cuts the mustard with our environmentally-conscious customer and includes a slice of organically-grown Green tomato and Green lettuce and has come a long way to ‘ketchup’ in the political kitchen of popularity.”

Most people choose their burger based on how they would vote, said Beig, but they don’t take it too seriously. And the poll is fairly accurate, getting it right 70 per cent of the time.

“For the federal [election], we were bang on. We had Liberals winning it,” he said.

What’s it at on Day 1?

“The Liberals are at four, the NDP are at three, the Green Party has one and one is undecided.”
