John Smith has been a resident of Abbotsford for nearly 30 years. He is an assistant vice-president and bank manager and worked as HSBC for 27 years.

Smith previously served as an Abbotsford school trustee from 1981-2005, including 12 years as School Board Chair.

He is a past director of the Career Technical Centre and has served as a Commissioner on the Abbotsford Parks, Recreation and Culture Board for many years.

In his capacity as councillor, Smith serves as a director on Fraser Valley Regional District Board and Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District Board, and as a member on the Chamber Board, Affordable Housing Fund Technical Advisory Committee, Agricultural Advisory Committee, Audit Committee, and Sumas Prairie Dyking, Drainage and Irrigation Committee. He has previously served as director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce (1995-6), director of the Career Technical Centre, and chair of the Social Development Advisory Committee.

Smith has lived in Abbotsford with his family for over 36 years, and is a member of the Abbotsford Rotary Club and the Abbotsford Executive Association. He has received two Paul Harris Awards (Rotary medals), the Governor General's Canada 125 Medal, and the Queen's Jubilee Medal for community service.
